Celebrating the 4th of July Over the Years

how we celebrate july 4th

It’s that time of year for parades, BBQ, and good old family fun! Let’s not forget about fireworks. Yes, we are talking about the 4th of July. Celebrating the 4th of July over the years has seen its share of must have dishes and activities for the ultimate holiday celebration. From Jello-Salad being the “it” treat in the 1950s to serving guests the ever so popular Chicken Caesar Salad in the 1990s. Do you remember bike parades in the 1980s? We do!

This year, large neighborhood gatherings and parades will go virtual and Jello-Salad may be absent from the table, but our love of celebrating with good food and family continues.

How We Celebrate the 4th of July

How we celebrate July 4th

The past few years, we have enjoyed the many festivities such as a parade, music in the streets, family fun run, car show, and an amazing fireworks show. This year my family and I will most likely go boating, in separate boats, locally and enjoy being together, but separate, on the water. I will still make family’s favorite recipes, Pad Lao and Watermelon Salad.

My children loved to participate in the annual Rose, White & Blue parade and riding their bikes along the parade route through one of San Jose’s oldest neighborhoods. But this year we will continue our tradition of BBQing and eating yummy treats. We will celebrate my son’s birthday as always and I can almost guarantee a water balloon fight just to keep things interesting.

How we celebrate July 4th

I usually celebrate the 4th of July with my family and having a BBQ at my parent’s house. This year I will be BBQing at my house with just my wife and daughter and having my favorite dish, carne asada with Spanish rice.
